Semantic schemes

Semantic network is one of the most effective tools for visualizing information and analysis. It displays objects and links between them in graphic and vect
or mode.

Semantic Archive system’s performance is based on a well-known analysis’ method called VDA (Visual Data Analysis). This method accelerates analyzing process by using effective data visualization techniques and interactive navigation tools for searching indirect connections between objects.

Different diagrams and schedules are most efficient for presenting numeric data, maps and graphic schemes are used for text information.

The main difference from operating with usual graphic editors is that our system allows to create schemes, using not graphic primitives, but semantic structures – people, companies, connections, events, etc, extracted from text documents and other sources.

Advantages of visualizing information

  • Puzzle effect - pieces of information extracted from different sources are displayed in one area with all connections shown between separate objects.
  • Data concentration. Even vast reports can easily fit a single A3 format page.
  • Tracing complex chains of connections between objects which could have been omitted by the analyst.
  • Mechanism for filtration by type, features and kinds of connections between objects
  • Ability to save pieces of a semantic network (including detailed schemes and integrated schemes with analyst’s conclusions) on different net levels or different bookmarks.
  • Indicating direction for the next research.  Forecasting.

Semantic networks are created in the inbuilt scheme redactor, which allows to edit schemes: add lines, various geometric figures and graphic files (icons, photos, etc.) as elements of graphic design.  Schemes can be saved in the system as .bmp files of transformed into MS Visio format using repots design templates (headlines, frames, legends).

Unique features of the semantic scheme editor in the Semantic Archive system

  • Interactive mode. One can always browse a person's record or a source of information from the semantic scheme or switch to another object or scheme.
  • Creation of strategic semantic systems – networks which group objects by types of facts they are connected with.
  • System includes broad graphic abilities of creating and editing schemes: geometric figures, text and object colors, pictures and maps insertion, different auto-parceling of objects (radial, hierarchical, rational, etc), adjusting depth of indicated connections for the network core object.
  • Flexible scheme management allows to copy the whole network or its part to a separate page, to remove or merge schemes, to save as a picture or an MS Visio file, to create analyst’s comments, etc.
  • Objects, their connections and events related to them can be inserted directly into the system by the use of the Semantic network (when an analyst is describing familiar data).
